Design

See your whole product designed, every screen and state, before anyone writes code. Use it after Scope is approved, or in presale mode to support an estimate.

Book a demo

You give it

  • Your approved scope and brand
  • Your creative direction and reference sites, optional
  • Existing mockups, if you have them

You decide

You approve a concept direction, then approve the refined design before it covers every screen.

You get

  • One working concept by default, or three competing prototypes with a blind review
  • A design system with tokens and core components
  • Every screen, navigation frame and state, with motion defined
  • Screenshots of every prototype
  • In presale mode, 6 to 12 representative screens to estimate from

See the product before you build it.

Episode 1 of Serras at Work follows serras.ventures from a short brief to a live site.

What should a design settle before anyone writes code?

Most teams see a product for the first time when it is half built. By then, every change is a rebuild. The Design workflow moves that moment earlier: you see the whole product, every screen and state on every device, while a change is still a design change.

This page answers that question with one real example, serras.ventures, from its first brief to its live site.

It starts from what you already decided

A design that starts from a blank page has to guess. Serras Design starts from the work of the earlier stages:

  • October 3The briefA dedicated home for what Serras Ventures is, how a partnership works, and the projects that have taken part.
  • October 3DiscoveryFive documents: the vision, the product, the narrative, the strategy and the information architecture.
  • October 3BrandThe approved Serras brand, applied unchanged, set the type, the color and the motion.
  • October 4AnalysisEvery capability, product object, state, rule and permission the site needs.
  • October 4ScopeThe approved list of what the site must do.

That is why a few good-looking screens from an AI design tool are not the same thing. Screens without that context can look finished and still miss what the product has to do.

What a person decides

Design does not decide for you. It works in two approvals.

  1. A direction.Design builds one working concept by default, or three competing prototypes with a blind review when you want options. You approve a direction before anything else is designed. For serras.ventures, the concept was refined twice, and the second round was approved on October 5 as the baseline for the whole site.
  2. The refined design. You approve the refined design before it is extended to every screen.

What a finished design should settle

If a design does not settle these, the build settles them for you, usually later and at a higher cost.

  • Every screen, in the order a user meets themWalk the product the way a user would. In Lumos, a marketing intelligence platform, that means the invitation, then the month's calendar, then today's work list.
  • The screens nobody demosEmpty, error and partial states are where most rework hides. Lumos's design includes the calendar before anything is planned, a library with nothing in it yet, and a server error that tells the user their work is safe.
  • Every device the product will run onHarmonious Hustle's Today screen is designed for the web, mobile web, iPhone and iPad, each with its own layout.
  • A design systemThe tokens, motion and core components every screen shares. serras.ventures has ten color tokens, a written motion thesis and 26 core components.
  • A trace from every requirement to its screensIn serras.ventures, every capability lists the requirements it meets and the screens that meet them, and all 148 interface acceptance criteria are linked to screens. Each of the 26 core components is traced to the line of source code it comes from.

Why the trace matters

A trace turns “build it like the design” into an instruction you can check. The team building the product knows which screens satisfy each requirement, and which code each component comes from.

0.32% of pixels differ.

The live serras.ventures home page, compared side by side with its approved design at desktop size. The brief arrived on October 3; the site went live on October 6.

What a design does not prove

A design shows what the product should be. It does not prove that working software behaves that way. Two later workflows check that: Feature validation tests behavior against the acceptance criteria, and Design validation compares the built screens with the approved design.

What to ask for on your next project

  • The scope each screen comes from.
  • The empty, error and loading states, not only the happy path.
  • Every device and screen size the product will ship to.
  • The design system: tokens, motion and components.
  • A trace from each requirement to the screens that meet it.

  1. 0:04 What if you could see your whole product, every screen, every state, on every device, before anyone writes a line of code?
  2. 0:13 You could question it while a change is still a design change, not a rebuild. And your client could approve something real.
  3. 0:23 That is what the Serras Design workflow does. It is one of the Shape workflows in Symphony, and it designs your whole product from what you have already decided.
  4. 0:33 So why not just ask an AI design tool for a few screens? Because a few good screens are not a product.
  5. 0:43 Serras Design starts from everything the earlier stages decided. Here is how serras.ventures was designed.
  6. 0:51 It began with a short brief, on October 3.
  7. 0:55 Discovery turned that brief into five documents: the vision, the product, the narrative, the strategy, and the information architecture.
  8. 1:06 The approved brand set the type, the color and the motion.
  9. 1:11 Analysis mapped every capability, state and rule the site needs.
  10. 1:16 And the approved scope said exactly what the site must do. Design starts from all of it.
  11. 1:24 First, it builds a working concept. One by default, or three competing prototypes with a blind review when you want options.
  12. 1:34 Then a person decides. You approve a direction before anything else is designed.
  13. 1:40 On serras.ventures, the concept was refined twice, then approved as the baseline for the whole site.
  14. 1:49 From that direction it builds a design system: the tokens, the motion and the core components every screen shares.
  15. 1:58 Then it designs every screen, in the order a user meets them.
  16. 2:04 Including the screens nobody demos. The month before anything is planned. A library with nothing in it yet. The moment something goes wrong.
  17. 2:15 On every device the product will run on: the web, the phone and the tablet.
  18. 2:22 And when it is done, every requirement is linked to the screens and states that meet it, and every component to the code it comes from. That is what lets the build match the design, pixel for pixel.
  19. 2:37 Serras Ventures went from a brief on October 3 to a live site on October 6. Side by side, the live home page differs from the approved design on about a third of one percent of its pixels.
  20. 2:53 So before you pay to build it, see it. Every screen, every state, every device, approved by you.
  21. 3:03 See the example, and the Design workflow, at serras.ai.

Questions

Do we have to finish Discovery and Scope first?

Design works best after Scope is approved, because it starts from those decisions. In presale mode, Design produces 6 to 12 representative screens to estimate from.

Can we start from mockups we already have?

Yes. Existing mockups are an input. Design can start from them instead of a new concept.

What do we approve, and when?

Two things: a concept direction, then the refined design before it covers every screen.

What do we receive at the end?

Every screen, navigation frame and state with motion defined, a design system with tokens and core components, and screenshots of every prototype. In serras.ventures, the design also carried the trace from each requirement to the screens that meet it.
